Two-way switches solve this: they control one light from two places, and together with intermediate switches — from three or more.

What a two-way switch is

An ordinary switch simply breaks or closes the circuit. A two-way switch toggles the live between two terminals, and a pair of two-way switches is linked by two wires. Every press flips the light to the opposite state: on by the door — off by the bed, and vice versa.

From the outside, a two-way switch looks no different from an ordinary one — the difference is inside and in the wiring.

Intermediate switch

When there are three or more control points, intermediate switches go between the pair of two-way switches. They are fitted in pairs, and for a third point there is a 2-gang intermediate switch. The light can be switched on and off from both places, and the brightness adjusted by the bed. Mark all the control points and lighting groups on the plan, and leave the wiring diagram and cable sizes to your electrician. You will not be able to add a two-way switch later without new wall chases.

FAQ

Can an ordinary switch be turned into a two-way one?

No. You need proper two-way modules and the right wiring between them.

Can I do without the extra wires?

Yes, if the light is controlled by a smart relay: then you can switch it on and off from your phone, with a scene or from the control panel. Relays are coming to the catalogue soon.

A two-way switch controls one light from two places, and with an intermediate one — from three or more.
