Adding them after the renovation is difficult: new points mean new wall chases. That is why the number of sockets is worked out at the design stage — for every room and every area.

How to work it out

List all the devices that are always on: fridge, router, TV, set-top box, night light.

Add the ones you switch on from time to time: vacuum cleaner, iron, hairdryer, heater, chargers.

Mark the places where you charge your phone and laptop.

Add 1–2 spare sockets for each area: you will have more appliances as the years go by.

Kitchen

The kitchen needs more sockets than any other room. Above the worktop there are usually 2–3 blocks of 2–3 sockets — for the kettle, coffee machine, microwave, blender and phone charger. Separate points go to built-in appliances: the fridge, dishwasher and cooker hood, while the oven and hob are connected on circuits of their own. On average, a kitchen ends up with 8–12 points.

Living room

By the TV, group 4–5 sockets — for the TV, set-top box, soundbar, router or games console, plus an Ethernet socket RJ45 and HDMI. By the sofa — 2 sockets, one of them with USB. One or two more — for a floor lamp, the vacuum cleaner and the Christmas tree.

Bedroom

On each side of the bed — 2 sockets, ideally with USB. A few more — for the TV, dressing table, air conditioner (often on a separate circuit) and vacuum cleaner. On average, that makes 6–8 points.

Children’s room

Above the desk — 2–3 sockets and RJ45, by the bed — one for a night light. For little ones, put the sockets higher up or choose sockets with covers.

Bathroom and WC

The washing machine, water heater, heated towel rail and hairdryer — that is at least 3–4 points. The washing machine and water heater are connected on separate circuits through an RCD, and the sockets are placed outside the zones around the bath and shower (for details, see the article on socket heights).

Hallway and entrance hall

A socket for the vacuum cleaner, shoe dryer, router or security system, and by the front door — a doorbell button. Usually 2–3 points are enough.

Common mistakes

Forgetting a socket for the router and Wi-Fi access points.

Only one group of sockets above the worktop.

Sockets hidden behind a wardrobe or the sofa.

No socket by the mirror for the hairdryer.

Leaving no spare sockets for new appliances.

How to save wall space

Group sockets into blocks in 2–5-gang frames: three sockets in one frame take up less space and look neater than three separate ones.
