There is no single “right” height for sockets and switches: it depends on the furniture, the appliances and how you use the room. But there are handy guidelines that help you avoid mistakes. All heights below are measured from the finished floor level \u2014 allowing for the screed, tiles or laminate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two approaches: European and classic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The European approach<\/strong>: sockets \u2014 25\u201330 cm from the floor, switches \u2014 80\u2013100 cm, level with your hand when your arm hangs down. The sockets do not catch the eye, appliance cables do not dangle, and even a child can easily reach the switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The classic approach<\/strong>, typical of older buildings: sockets \u2014 about 90 cm, switches \u2014 150\u2013160 cm. You do not have to bend down to reach the sockets, but they stand out on the wall, and cables run up to them from the appliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most modern renovations go for the European option, while above worktops, cabinets and desks the sockets are raised higher \u2014 to where they are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kitchen: sockets above the worktop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The standard worktop height is 85\u201390 cm, so sockets 15\u201320 cm above it do not hide behind the coffee machine or interfere with the splashback. Group them in sets of 2\u20133 in a frame<\/a> where the kettle, microwave and coffee machine will stand. Powerful appliances \u2014 the oven, hob and dishwasher \u2014 are connected on separate circuits, and the sockets for built-in appliances are moved to the adjacent cabinet. A socket with cover keeps dust and dirt out of the outlets while they are not in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bedroom and workspace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By the bed, the socket goes slightly higher than the bedside table so that the furniture does not cover it \u2014 ideally one with USB<\/a>. This is also a handy spot for a two-way switch<\/a> for the ceiling light. At a desk, sockets are raised to 10\u201315 cm above the desk surface: you can plug in chargers and a lamp without crawling under the desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bathroom: safety first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the bathroom, sockets are fitted only outside the zones around the bath, shower and washbasin defined by building regulations, and are connected through an RCD \u2014 a residual current device. Choose sockets with splash protection of at least IP44. Agree the exact position with your electrician: they have the final say here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switches: on the door handle side<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The switch goes on the handle side, 10\u201315 cm from the door architrave, so that it does not end up behind the open door. In long hallways and rooms with two entrances, it is handy to switch the light from several places \u2014 that is what two-way and intermediate switches<\/a> are for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tip before plastering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Photograph every wall with a tape measure in the shot once the cables are laid but the plaster is not yet on. These photos will come in handy when you want to hang a shelf or a picture without hitting the wiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there mandatory height standards?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Building regulations and the rules for electrical installations set safety requirements \u2014 for example, for bathrooms. Heights in living spaces are usually chosen to suit the furniture and your habits. Agree the final layout with your electrician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How high should the TV socket be?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the TV is wall-mounted, the sockets, HDMI and RJ45<\/a> go behind it, at about 110\u2013130 cm, so that the cables are out of sight. If the TV stands on a TV unit, place them above it or 25\u201330 cm from the floor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
