A smart electric curtain track is a track with a built-in motor that opens and closes the curtains by itself. You can control it with a remote, from your smartphone, by voice through a Google Home speaker or simply by touching the fabric. The curtains open on a schedule in the morning and close in the evening \u2014 even when you are not at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How an electric curtain track works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The motor sits at one end of the track, and a belt inside pulls the runners that carry the curtain. The motor remembers the end positions, so the curtain stops in exactly the same place every time. A soft start and stop protect the fabric and the mechanism, and if there is a power cut, you can move the curtains by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The track is made to length for your window and can be fixed to the ceiling (including in a recess) or to the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wired or wireless motor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The wired MP-82 and MP-401 motors<\/strong> run on 220 V mains power and connect to Wi-Fi directly \u2014 no separate gateway is needed. They are the choice when power can be run to the track during the renovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wireless ML-40<\/strong> runs on a 2200 mAh battery: charging via USB-C takes 6\u20138 hours, and a charge lasts 3\u20134 months. There is no wiring to run, so it suits rooms where the renovation is already finished. The ML-40 works over Zigbee<\/a>: phone control and schedules need a Zigbee gateway, while the remote and touch control work without one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To estimate the weight, bear in mind that curtains are made with extra width: the fabric is one and a half to two times the width of the window. Heavy blackout and velvet are best left to the MP-82 \u2014 a motor with power to spare runs more quietly and is under less strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to work out the track length<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Measure the width of the window opening or recess.<\/li>\n\n
  2. Add 15\u201330 cm on each side so that the open curtains do not cover the glass or block the light.<\/li>\n\n
  3. For a wall-to-wall recess, the length equals the width of the recess minus a few centimetres for installation.<\/li>\n\n
  4. Decide which side the motor will go on and whether the curtains will open to both sides or gather to one side.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
