Switches, relays, sensors and curtain motors use it to exchange short commands: “turn the light on”, “close the curtains”, “the sensor went off”. The devices use so little power that battery sensors run for months without a change.

How Zigbee works

Zigbee runs on 2.4 GHz, like home Wi-Fi, but it sends very short messages rather than video and web pages. So the radio does not need to stay connected all the time: it wakes up, sends a command and goes back to sleep.

Mains-powered devices — relays, switches, curtain motors — act as repeaters and pass the signal on. This forms a mesh network: the more devices you have, the more stable the connection becomes, even in far rooms and behind several walls.

To control the network from your phone you need a gateway (hub). It brings the Zigbee devices together and connects them to Wi-Fi and the app. Without a gateway a device can be switched with a remote or a button, but not from your phone or on a schedule.

Zigbee or Wi-Fi: the difference

Zigbee

Wi-Fi

Connection

Through a gateway

Directly to the router

Power use

Very low: sensors run on batteries for months

Higher: devices are usually mains-powered

Load on the router

None: devices talk to each other

Every device takes a place in the network

Coverage

Grows with every device (mesh)

Depends on the router and extenders

Best for

Many sensors, relays and switches

Single devices: thermostat, curtain track, camera

Most smart flats use both. For example, a Wi-Fi thermostat for floor heating connects straight to the router, while sensors and relays work over Zigbee. In the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app they still appear side by side.

What Zigbee 3.0 is

Zigbee 3.0 is the version of the standard that unified the earlier variants of the protocol. Certified Zigbee 3.0 devices from different brands can work in one network. Before buying, it is still worth checking that your gateway and app support the device — staying within one ecosystem is the easiest way.

Where to start

Choose a gateway or a panel with built-in Zigbee. The Smart Panel control panel supports Zigbee 3.0 and works with more than 100 Zigbee devices — it is both the centre of the system and a handy screen on the wall.

Check the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi where the gateway or panel will be: the system reaches the internet through it.

Add the first devices. The wireless curtain track with the ML-40 motor works over Zigbee, and relays and sensors are coming to the catalogue soon.

Set up scenes in the app: for example, “Night” closes the curtains and turns off the lights with one tap.

A tip for the renovation

If you plan smart relays in your switches, run a neutral wire to every switch box and use deeper back boxes — relays need room and power. Put the gateway closer to the centre of the flat, not in a corner behind the metal door of a cabinet.

FAQ

Does Zigbee work without the internet?

The devices keep exchanging commands through the gateway, and some scenes can run locally — it depends on the gateway. Controlling your home from your phone while away is not possible without the internet.

How many devices can I connect?

It depends on the gateway: home gateways are usually designed for dozens of devices, and the mesh network only gets stronger with every new mains-powered device.

Does Zigbee interfere with home Wi-Fi?

Both use 2.4 GHz, but Zigbee sends little data and transmits rarely. If the connection is unstable, changing the Wi-Fi channel on the router helps.

Zigbee is a protocol made for the smart home: how its mesh network works, why you need a gateway, how Zigbee differs from Wi-Fi and where to start.

[1

post-1272","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-1
["GET
